What is coding data in qualitative research?

Coding in qualitative research is the fundamental process of organizing and interpreting raw qualitative data. The process involves systematically identifying ideas, patterns, concepts, and categories in qualitative data. Coding the data in qualitative research involves going beyond descriptive summaries and going deeper into deriving the meaning of the research. Coding is used in data analysis of qualitative research to make sense of the collected data by identifying meaningful connections and relationships within the data.

Why is Coding Data in Qualitative Research Essential?

Coding data for qualitative research occurs after reading and re-reading the collected raw data. Arguably, coding is the second step of a thematic data analysis process, after understanding your data. As such, coding data in qualitative research is essential because it allows researchers to identify the concepts that form the themes. Codes are combined to form categories, from which themes and sub-themes are derived. Accordingly, the iterative process for coding qualitative data includes reading the raw data, identifying codes, creating coding categories, formulating the themes, and retrieving sub-themes.

Types of Coding in Qualitative Research

Coding in qualitative research can be categorized into two broad categories: Inductive Coding and Deductive Coding.

Inductive coding in qualitative research is data-driven, where we generate codes directly from your collected raw data. Inductive coding involves reading the raw data and identifying the emerging or recurrent concepts.

Deductive coding involves using pre-defined codes or categories that are often derived from literature, theories, or research questions.

There are other coding methods within deductive and inductive approaches, which are selected based on the research goals. The common coding methods within deductive and inductive approaches are:

Open Coding: This involves breaking the raw data into segments and assigning descriptive labels to the segments.

In Vivo Coding: Involves using the exact words from participants’ raw data as codes.

Descriptive Coding: The coding method involves lining codes and categories to identify relationships and connections between themes.

Axial Coding: The approach involves linking codes and categories to identify the relationships and connections that exist.

Pattern Coding: Involves identifying broader patterns and structures from the collected data
